So the spinach has been pantyhosed and is on its way to the big spinach garden in the sky. It didn’t die of embarrassment from the ill-fitting and baggy hosiery. It successfully fulfilled its spinach bearing duties, flowered and is slowly and peacefully becoming compost. The pantyhose is to catch the seeds which will hopefully [...]

We’re going on vacation! We have a lot to do over the next few days and we’re feeling the pressure to get it all done before we leave. Thankfully, we have a neighbor and a friend who tends to the animals and our property when we’re away. Otherwise, we would be homebound.

The beets go on and on and on

So 10 days ago, I pulled the beets from the ground (I enjoy that part…so Peter Rabbit), cut off the greens leaving 2″ as recommended, bagged them and stored them in our pantry. Today, when I opened the pantry a waft of soily, spoily green smell hit my nose. The beets were fine, [...]

Last summer, we were swarmed by bees. We have several flowering trees in our front yard and you could hear the buzzing inside with the windows closed. Upon closer inspection of the trees, you would find thousands of honey bees. It was a bit intimidating and I generally kept my distance since [...]

We started our weekend early. Seeing it’s summer and all. Jett had a sleepover Thursday night. I always enjoy having extra kids over. There’s always lots of noise and activity and many rules are lifted…for a limited time. Although they spend much time playing indoors since it’s so incredibly hot [...]

Today I woke up in a very bad mood. I think the mood was set when I slept through the radio alarm which is tuned to public radio. While I was attempting to get another 20 minutes of peaceful sleep, my brain was being bombarded by disturbing messages like “more killed in Iraq,” [...]

This is the first summer that I haven’t been working and Jett has not been in school or daycare. I was a little worried that Jett and I would drive each other crazy so I’ve been trying to keep our summer days busy.
Jett’s been taking swimming lesson. As much time as we spent [...]

Today, Jett and I made a picnic lunch for Father’s Day. We sat in the shade of one of our big pecan trees and watched the hummingbirds and butterflies flit from flowering tree to flowering tree while we ate sandwiches and brownies. Then John went fishing. Jett and I spent the afternoon [...]

Saturday was auction day. I had never been to one before, well except for charity auctions (not the same). John had attended one a few months back–an Estate Sale, house and all contents. He was drawn by the coin collection mentioned in the auction listing. We discussed a budget which he [...]

Today I learned two things about chickens:
The will eat whole beets.
They whole-heartedly defy the rule “Never eat something bigger than your head.”
All that was left of the gigantic beet from yesterday was it’s top with a few straggly purple stems attached. I wonder if eating lots of beets will result in purple eggs. [...]
