Just another week on a small farm in a small town

Today we went to Thomasville for school orientation. I think I’ve finally decided on the small school in Moultrie. I just feel more comfortable with the environment and the teachers. Plus it’s closer and we have friends nearby if we need any help. So, I’ve made my decision. Unless I change it by Sunday. School starts Monday so I have until then to waffle.
We also went to visit some friends downtown and brought roma tomatoes, basil, jalapeno, parsley and cilantro from the garden. They thanked us with sage bath soap. Yum. This couple moved up from Hollywood, FL where they lived and owned a store which was next door to the store of my mom’s good friend. I met one of the guys’ sister who just moved up from Miami. Hmmm.We also visited the couple with the cute kitchen store across the way. They used to own 2 stores in Gateway Plaza in Victoria Park. We met their friends, another couple, who are moving up from Fort Lauderdale in September. Hmmm. I’m sensing a trend here. Anyone catching on?
We had a week of blustery weather. It stormed almost every day featuring either heavy rains or super strong winds. Thankfully we didn’t get both on the same day. Today it drizzled all day. The goats and dogs loved it. The cats and chickens not so much. I didn’t mind as it gave me another excuse not to have to tackle the jungle in the pasture garden. The salad garden is pretty well under control. It’s relatively weed-free. All I have to do is compost and lay the black garden paper.
We did get our new seed order today from Baker’s Heirloom Seed Company. That is pretty exciting (oh how times have changed) and somewhat motivating. We’ll be planting: potatoes, garlic, red onion, yellow onion, edamame, spinach, 6 types of lettuce, purple artichoke, baby carrots, white carrots, french pickling cukes, standard cukes, waltham broccoli, basket gourd and pak choy. Oooh, that’s a lot when I list it out.
We still have in the ground and fruiting: roma tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, the melons, assorted gourds, pumpkin, sweet corn, strawberry popcorn, jalapeno, purple cabbage, carrots and italian broccoli. We’re also expecting the pear and pomegranete trees to be ready for picking this month. We just got news that Thomasville has scheduled 3 more green markets so I’m hoping we have new produce to sell along with the pet food.
I have to go play Cadoo with Jett so I’ll leave it at that for now.
