Okay, I’m putting this in writing so maybe I’ll actually do it. Most of you know, I want a horse. Actually, I want two horses. I’ve been putting ads in the local papers for the last few months, fielding calls, but to tell the truth, I’ve only been out to see one of the horses that have been offered up (about a dozen total). It was a nice horse, but a bit too fast for me, being a novice and all. Plus it was the first horse I looked at. It’s kind of like when you buy a house…you never buy the first one.
So I have a current list of about 5 horses to go see. Now I just have to make the time to go see them. Why am I putting this off? I think I’m somewhat intimidated not knowing that much about horses anymore. I met a woman who knows a lot about horses who offered to go and look with me, but she seems to have fallen on hard times and is not so easy to locate at the moment. I should probably drive by her home and see if all is well. It’d be the neighborly thing to do, huh? Plus, I could really use her help. And maybe she could use mine.
John wants a buffalo and this week I found an ad for one for sale. It’s a big buffalo though — a full-grown bull. We’re talking like 1800 pounds of bull. No comment. I think that’s a bit more buffalo than John was looking for. When I told him about it, he got all wishy-washy on me as he thought about how to manage an animal that big. John has visions of riding his buffalo through the fields and feeding it by hand. However, they will apparently crash through fences and have been known to jump over them too, hand-feeding and riding is not something that comes easily. We read a story about a guy whose 4 buffalo hopped the fence and he spent the next 3 months trying to round them back up. Apparently John wants a baby buffalo — aw. He’s probably right though.
So, we may not have a buffalo anytime soon, but my goal is to have at least one horse by the end of the year. So when we talk or write, ask me, “How’s the horse, cowgirl?”, or something along those lines to keep me focused. It has been spoken, um, written.
