Rodeo-eo-eo-eo

clampettsIt was rodeo time again. Jett thinks the bucking bulls and the rodeo clown are the coolest. I love the barrel racing. I can do without the calf roping which is basically a big man accosting a cute baby cow, body slamming it to the ground and hog-tying it. Yeah, real big man.

As a treat, we had funnel cake (yum), cotton candy and soda. I now have a stomach ache. Some treat. The funnel cake was no problem. It was the cotton candy and soda that did me in. Too much sugar. We’ve cut out a lot of (processed) sugar in our diet. And soda is a rarity, especially for John who used to be a 2 liter bottle a day drinker. Jett isn’t allowed any soda. As gross as it makes us feel, I don’t know why we still consider this junk a treat. I guess old habits die hard. Especially when everyone around you consumes it on a daily basis. It’s normal.

Especially here. So many people eat crap. All the time. Fast food, candy, cheetos and soda are the normal diet for most kids and adults it seems. I freaked out when Jett started pre-k. The parents took turns bringing in snacks on a weekly basis. I naturally assumed parents would bring fruit, cheese, maybe some chips, pretzels, cookies. Jett’s first day he was given cheetos (which he now craves), chocolate pudding cup, snowballs and a bag of candy. Hello? Four year olds with orange hands on speed?
I mean it’s okay once in a while. But we’re talking every day, every meal. You’d think being in a rural, traditional farming area people would be more inclined to eat fruit and veggies. The only veggies eaten on a regular basis are peanuts (boiled to mush), collards (boiled with fatback) and peas (also boiled with fatback). And the kids aren’t going near any of that, not that it would even matter nutritionally.

There are the delicious peaches, but you have to be sure they’re Georgia peaches. Passing through Wal-Mart (don’t even get me started), they had a great deal on peaches…from California! We’re in the freakin’ peach state and they’re trying to sell me peaches from the other side of the country. I buy most of our produce (that we don’t grow ourselves) from the farmer’s market. It’s mostly, somewhat local, but there are quite a few imports too.

But I digress. The rodeo was fun. Jett wants to be a bull-bustin’ cowboy and I want to be a high-speed barrel racin’ cowgirl. All we need is the horse.
