Hometown girl

Tonight, Jett and I (John was in Atlanta on business) went to an annual event in Thomasville: Victorian Christmas. Downtown Thomasville is an historic district. Good: most of the old buildings and houses have been authentically renovated. Bad: If you buy a building or house in Thomasville proper, you can’t do any renovation without approval from the city and the historic board. In any case, it looks really cool and has kept Thomasville a vibrant community unlike many of the surrounding towns. It’s also a big reason that so many people, like us, are moving into the area.

Victorian Christmas is a quaint festival featuring lots of homemade food vendors, craftspeople and entertainers. We enjoyed Mennonite brownies, Methodist chicken gumbo, Baptist barbecue and a snowball fight. We got there early and it wasn’t too crowded, but that changed within the course of an hour. People drive up from north Florida and down from central Georgia every year to attend.

The thing I noticed was that we knew a lot of people there. And the people we didn’t know were friendly and inclusive. And I guess I’ve made a point of being more friendly and inclusive as well. As we were sharing a table with some folks from Albany, eating brownies, enjoying the carols, they asked if we lived here. I said yes, although relative newcomers, we are enjoying our life here. And I felt kind of proud to be able to say that we are a part of the community.

Though I am a Florida girl at heart and always refer to Fort Lauderdale as home, I actually felt for the first time since we’ve been here that maybe we’ve found another place to call home.

Even though you miss Florida, I see tha you have made a wonderful home for your family. I love to visit and share your home and see my grandson grow up. I wished I lived closer. Well, I can always drive in my new Lincoln with GPS, so I won’t miss the house on my way in.
