The Birds

Posted on January 21, 2008 - Filed Under birds, holiday, pecans, trees

In the winter when everything is gray and brown and dreary, the birds come. Bright red cardinals, yellow wrens, blue jays and orange orioles. They cover the ground eating nuts and bugs. If you toss a pecan in their direction disturbing their peace, it’s like the ground takes flight. Even Jett has taken notice. He spent an afternoon staring out his bedroom windows entranced by the bird activity. Today, he called me over to share the view. There must have been 100 birds on the ground. I counted at least 10 bright red cardinals. They’re the most beautiful against the stark washed-out color of the grass and trees, like decorations.

The yellow wrens are the funniest. They’re so tiny and completely camouflaged in the dead yellow grass, you really only see them as they hop from crushed pecan to crushed pecan or all soar up as one into the sky when a cat creeps by. And that’s the reason we have so many birds right now…crushed pecans.

We are way behind in picking pecans due to being away for the holidays, and a rash of cold, rainy days. When we came home after the new year, the ground around our house was very crunchy and a bit dangerous to walk on. Since then, I’ve picked up most of the larger pecans in the back, but the front trees carry these tiny, pointy pecans that are almost too much trouble to pick up. However, now that there are so many, not only is it worth the trouble (we’re talking thousands of pecans), it’s almost a necessity.

But out of our lax and laziness came beauty. I don’t feel quite so bad now for not keeping up with the pecans. I did it for the birds.

Hello Georgianiens. You know, you could always ask me to look after your property during your holidays. I am always available during that time and I so feel the attraction of your place and you know I can pick and shell those pecans…
