My pet rock

John and I are always trying to find that simple “thing” that is easy to make and market, and everyone wants. Hopefully, it would be more useful than a pet rock, but it follows those same rules that made everyone buy a rock in a box…you know you had one. I did!
While preparing for this weekend’s Green Market, I was trying to decide if I should go through all the effort of making roasted sunflower seeds. It involves picking all the tiny seeds out of the flowers, soaking in brine, roasting and packaging. Quite tedious when you’re not in the mood and I was not. But while I was staring at my giant dried flowers on 2 foot cut stems, I realized how pretty and useful they are just like that. Duh, complete bird feeder, ready-to-go, no prep needed. Nature is so smart! However, I did add a raffia bow, Angeka On The Farm Label (with directions for using your “bird feeder” – ha ha, no, seriously!), and a low $2 market price to make it even more appealing. I know my demographics ‘cuz it was me!
Always doubting my abilities, even though I know when I’m right, I only took 7 stems. Which of course all sold out immediately. Well, there is one market left for the season and I will be bringing the other 50+ stems complete with raffia and tag…and maybe a slightly higher price point.
Although we probably won’t get rich off it (although you never know, again, see title of this post), it’ simple, natural, beautiful and useful…and we’ll have good bird karma. Once again, nature provides in one way or another.
