Junior licked a toad

Posted on December 13, 2008 - Filed Under animals, dog, ick!, toad

Need I say more? Well, in case this should happen to your pup, I will share the experience.

8am – John feeds the dogs and lets them out of the kennel to run. I go to run errands. All’s well.

10am – I come home to find 2 dogs joyfully barking and running to greet the car. Junior’s just laying there. Raises his head hello. Not at all normal procedure. Seems he can barely get up and walk. And let’s just say so to spare you the gory details, his stomach is not right either.

Couldn’t find any injuries. No visible bites. A mystery. Do find a dead, but not eaten or terribly mangled toad near the kennel. Hmmmm.

After several hours, Junior pretty much incapacitated, and unsure of how to treat his ailments, go to the no-nonsense country vet. Pack Junior into the car. At least he enjoys car rides. He’s the type of dog that sees the car door open and considers it an invitation. I’ve found him several times in the passenger’s seat waiting expectantly.

Junior might have enjoyed the car ride, but we did not! Peee-Ewwww! What the frick is that smell? Junior, gross! Quick roll down the windows. This happened several times over the 20 minute drive to the vet. (Aside: reminds me of an old friend who will remain nameless, but knows who he is and so may you!) And then at the vet people were eying me suspiciously while I assured them it wasn’t me…the dog, I swear!

In any case, vet couldn’t find anything I hadn’t already, just made a few fart jokes. I mentioned the toad and the light bulb went off. Thankfully, he didn’t ingest the toad, just got some of the toxic juice they secrete as a defense. Twenty-four hours later, he’s almost back to normal.  If he had actually eaten the toad, it could have been much more severe and possibly fatal.

I am relieved he’s okay, but I will still add this to my growing list of animal grievances. They’d better start making some new year’s resolutions. Or maybe I’d better.
