The frozen georgian tundra

Now I know, I know, it’s cold everywhere, even in the frigid south, but hey, it’s my blog, get you’re own!

These are the times when being 40 minutes north of the Florida line and 7 hours above south Florida really count. It’s freakin’ freezing (literally, below) here! Which is bizarre considering last week, we had beautiful weather: 50s at night, 80s at day. It was warm enough that the asian pear tree popped out a few blooms and sunflowers started sprouting underneath the bird feeders.

We’ve been in the high 20s, low 30s all this week and the next few nights we’re talking mid teens! Now, I know it’s thankfully only for a very short duration, but that’s cold for a Florida girl! And a great excuse (not that you really need one) for a fire on the hearth.

The dogs pack into the laundry room sleeping on top of each other for warmth. The goats huddle in the hay piles. Sonic the donkey tries to wedge himself in among them. Sure, now he wants to be friendly. I had a slight panic for the horses until I went on a website thread entitled “how cold is too cold for horses?” After reading posts from horse owners in Canada, Montana and other ungodly cold places who also have no barns or horse blankets and keep their horses at pasture during blizzards in -20 degrees, I didn’t feel quite so bad. They just recommend plenty of hay and feed. I can do that. Plus I’ve noticed the horses have a bit of a shag going on which has got to help.

Unfortunately, the early sprouting, easily tricked sunflowers and pear blossoms will not fare as well.  Like them, I look forward to spring.
