Please sing along with me…Which of these things are not like the others?

After months of waiting and wondering, we finally plucked our first “easter” eggs.  We’ve had a bounty of brown, a few pink, and now finally GREEN!  I was so excited I jumped up and down and screamed like the girl I am!  I’m [...]

Chicken Check

I have not eaten any commercially produced chicken product since the line was drawn (in  my mind) in October 2009.  Nothing.  Nada.  Tempted?  No.  The only chicken that has been in my mouth came from our backyard.  Shhh, don’t tell them.  And be careful what you say around Jett!  I have, however, continued to eat [...]

9…10…a big fat hen

Today we traded 2 female goats for 10 chickens: 4 live layers, 6 frozen. The 4 new laying hens are a bit older than our current chickens and have already laid 3 brown eggs: 1 is your typical small grade egg, the other 2 are like mini egg-size, but edible. They’ll [...]

How to teach a new chick old tricks

Posted on July 4, 2009 - Filed Under animals, chickens, farm maintenance | Leave a Comment

Chickens do not come with instruction manuals.  Nor do they come pre-programmed to know what to do or not do.  Although they should.  There is a theory that sense has been bred out of many animals, including chickens.  Most chicks nowadays are shipped in shell or just hatched in a box and grow up with [...]

Meet the newest members of our brood. Finally, new chickens! 36 35 34 (eeks, one didn’t get out of the way of the waterer in time and one was pecked to death. I’ll spare you the gory details) of varying breeds: mostly Americanas mixed with Rhode Island Reds and Goldens. [...]
