I’m currently in canning mode (pesto, pear concoctions, whatever else comes along), so I’m cleaning out the storage cupboard of last year’s leftovers…which means you should too! Although I’ve heard stories of people safely keeping and eating their home-canned goods for years, we’re all a bunch of wusses now. Just kidding, it’s better [...]

After weeks of below freezing temperatures, rain and bluster, this week started with sun and warmth…aaaah….making working outside a pleasure again. I don’t know how long it will last, so I’m trying to take advantage.
The only thing in bloom right now is the Asian pear tree which seemed to thrive on the much cooler temperatures. [...]

New event for the summer farm olympics: Canning! And yes, I would win the gold. I know it’s cliche, but we’re completely hooked on the Olympic coverage and it’s just so fitting.
Today, was a marathon: 24 half pints of Pear Butter Infused w/Vanilla Bean & Rosemary, 9 pints of Whole Pears in Brandy w/Cinnamon, and [...]

Spring is rapidly approaching, as usual, faster than we expected. You’d think we’d be prepared by now, but no. This summer will mark 2 years since we moved here. Two years! And we’re still struggling to get it together. I’m learning to go with the flow though. That’s good, [...]

Oh yes, the canning continues. Blah blah blah blah blah. Yes, my enthusiasm is waning, but just a bit. I’m also sure you’re quite tired of hearing about it as well. But my goal is to document my doings, so I’ll stick with it if you will. So quick rundown. [...]

Today was Green Market #3 for us. And it was a great success! We had a record 13 vendors (haha, woohoo!) and sold a ton. I decided to bring my canned pear recipes (roasted pear chutney, cranberry pear chutney, cranberry pear relish, pear ginger marmalade and pear butter infused w/vanilla bean & [...]

Canning-palooza continues tomorrow. Pear chutney is on the menu. I wanted to make it with cranberries, but have yet to be able to find any fresh cranberries in the markets. Of course, next month cranberries will be everywhere, but alas, our pears will not.
I’ve been reading about root cellars in the hopes of creating one [...]

Okay, as long as no one dies from botulism, I’m really enjoying the canning process so far. It’s very time consuming, but very addictive. Today, I spent 6 hours (!) making and canning Old Fashion Pear Ginger Marmalade and Pear Butter Infused with Rosemary and Vanilla Bean. I have 16 half-pint jars canned. The marmalade [...]

We finally got a new used truck today. It’s a 1973 Jeep Commando. It’s definitely got some wear and tear on it, but it definitely looks good for a 34 year old vehicle. And it drives…woohoo! We (well, John drove it; Jett and I were in the Honda) drove it 2.5 hours from where we [...]
