Freezing!  Temperature was 24 degrees.  It actually snowed last Friday night for about 20 minutes.  Everyone inside is bundled in blankets.  Everyone outside is bundled in hay.
New Baby goat born on my birthday!  Her name is Millie.  She’s multi-colored.  Photos to come, promise.  She had a twin brother, but he mysteriously disappeared one night.  No [...]

You Can’t Keep A Good Garden Down

Despite my best efforts to ignore it, the garden just will not go away! I haven’t hoed or sown or watered in months (just don’t ask), yet still hot peppers, green & yellow bell peppers, chinese eggplant, sunflowers and even tomatoes are still popping up. Amazing.
I also have bottle gourds and one, just [...]

Hoe there girl

After my hectic morning yesterday, I decided to spend the afternoon in the relative safety of the pasture garden-to-be. Our neighbor came over the other day and harrowed the area for us to help get the clumps of grass and weeds somewhat under control so there is room for the plants we prefer to [...]

After weeks of below freezing temperatures, rain and bluster, this week started with sun and warmth…aaaah….making working outside a pleasure again.  I don’t know how long it will last, so I’m trying to take advantage.
The only thing in bloom right now is the Asian pear tree which seemed to thrive on the much cooler temperatures.  [...]

It’s not just the economy seeing a downturn

Our gardens and our pecan trees seem to be following in the footsteps of our economy.  Not much there.
Summer gardens  did really well.  Just about everything grew well and bore fruit.  My pepper and eggplants are still going strong.  Yet we had meager returns on seeds planted this fall.  Out of 15+ seeds planted for [...]

Garden Geek

Call me a garden geek, but it’s really exciting when tiny plants start popping where you simply put a teeny tiny seed under some dirt with a sprinkling of water.  Our last minute lettuce is thriving:  beautiful baby leaf lettuce just like I used to buy from a bag!  And almost all the carrots have [...]

Spring is rapidly approaching, as usual, faster than we expected. You’d think we’d be prepared by now, but no. This summer will mark 2 years since we moved here. Two years! And we’re still struggling to get it together. I’m learning to go with the flow though. That’s good, [...]

Hello Jack Frost

We got the first frost on Tuesday morning.  I tried to prepare the best I knew how which honestly isn’t saying much!  I potted a few herbs and harvested some more.  I covered the most prolific tomato plants, the peppers, bok choy, carrots and some of the lettuces just because they’re so small.  I left [...]

Repeat daily as needed

This weekend was spent picking pecks of proliferating pecans peppering our property. This will be an ongoing activity through the end of the year…fair warning, you will be hearing much more about this subject. Jett and I have also been sanding gourds. He has big plans for these gourds involving real tools, [...]
